Japanese Society for Alternatives
to Animal Experiments
Yasuo Ohno, President
|
In addition to the great honor to be a president of 6th World Congress
on Alternative and Animal Use, I was elected to be a president of JSAAE
from 2009-2010. I would like to express great thanks to all member of JSAAE.
We could complete 6th World Congress on Alternative and Animal Use in the Life Sciences quite successfully. There were 440 attendants from 33 countries and one region and 596 from Japan. This is accomplished by a best voluntary service of every member of JSAAE. This was the reason why we could obtain support of many friends, industries and regulatory agencies to this congress. I would like to express deepest thanks to every person and organizations who dedicated to 6th World Congress.
This success indicated the ability of JSAAE members and, therefore, we
became to be expected to contribute more to solve international issues
related to alternatives with foreign organizations. However, I suspect
that weariness remained in JSAAE and her members as a whole. I think that
this is a time to take a brief rest. I would like to walk in the same line
paved by former president, Dr Hiroshi Itagaki and run within our strength.
Simplification of JSAAE activity by the revision of JSAAE code seems necessary.
Aim of JSAAE is to promote scientific research and development in the
field of alternative to animal experiments. Education and popularization
of 3Rs notion and the accomplishments of our society is also included.
Society offers the place of communication among scientists and also with
citizens. She has also been funding researches and support validation of
the new methods. I would like to continue these activities by the help
of council and executive committee members. New technology like ES cells
and iPS cell, and toxicopanomics has been emerging. It is necessary to
incorporate these into alternatives. However, it is not impossible to accomplish
by ourselves. It is necessary to cooperate with the other scientific communities
and regulatory agencies.
As advocated by former president Hitoshi Itagaki, gradual alteration of generations is indispensable for the continuation of any organization. Gradual transfer of responsibility of the management of our society to the young person is important. Therefore, I asked members of an executive committee to recruit young scientist to become a member of every sub-committees. Thanks to them, we could obtain voluntary cooperation of many young scientists. Let’s work together for the promotion of 3Rs.
