Abstract
INVITTOX, an information service funded by the Commission of European Communities and by FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments), aims to promote the acceptance and use of in vitro methods for toxicity testing by facilitating access to relevant methodological information. Information on a test system is solicited from a scientist who is either the developer or a regular user of the system, and it is presented in the form of a self-contained protocol, which is produced by INVITTOX staff in consultation with the informant. The mode of operation of INVITTOX is described and compared to those of other information sources in the field of in vitro toxicology. It is concluded that INVITT0X has its own unique characteristics, by which it complements, and does not rival, other information-producing services.
